best places to visit in Algeria
Constantine
Constantine is the capital of Constantine Province in north-eastern Algeria. During Roman times it was called Cirta and was renamed “Constantina” in honour of emperor Constantine the Great.
There are several museums and historical sites located around the city. Constantine is often referred to as the “City of Bridges” due to the picturesque bridges connecting the various hills, valleys, and ravines that the city is built on and around.
Sétif
Sétif is an Algerian city and the capital of the Sétif Province. It is one of the most important cities of eastern Algeria since it is considered the trade capital of the country. It is located 131 km west of Constantine and is at 1,100 meters altitude.
The local economy focuses on trading and industries such as woodworking and manufacturing carpets and metal handicrafts. The trade is mainly in grain and livestock from the surrounding region. Locally produced wheat is processed by local factories to produce couscous, semolina, and noodles. Summers in Sétif are hot and dry, while winters are cool with low to moderate rainfall.
El-Oued
El-Oued, is a town in north-eastern Algeria, in the northern Sahara 80 km west of the border with Tunisia. A river (oued) once flowed to the east, but it was swallowed by the intervening sands. The town sits in the middle of the oasis – a piece of fertile land in a desert where freshwater is available.
El-Oued has narrow winding streets with cube-shaped buildings of claystone with cupolas. The houses are clustered, and as a result, create a “Town of a Thousand Domes,” according to the French writer-adventurer Isabella Eberhardt (1877–1904).
