best places to visit in Belize
Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary
The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary is a nature reserve in south-central Belize. It was established to protect the forests, fauna and watersheds (approximately 400 km²) of the eastern slopes of the Maya Mountains. The reserve was established in 1986 as the first protected area for protection of the jaguar. It is believed that about 60 of Belize’s 700 jaguars live in the sanctuary, but the chances of seeing one are very low.
The name ‘Cockscomb’ came from the appearance of the Cockscomb Mountain ridge, that resembles a rooster’s comb. The reserve is an ideal environment for plant-spotting, bird viewing or seeking out other wildlife, and the trail system is the best developed in any of Belize’s protected areas.
Tobacco Caye
Tobacco Caye is a tiny island in Belize, about 16 km east of Dangriga. It is approximately 12000 m² in area, and is shaped like an yam. It has a permanent population of less than 50 people but sees a regular stream of travelers thanks to the five small lodges on the island (ideal for rest and relaxation.)
Tobacco Caye lies within the South Water Caye Marine Reserve, part of Belize’s national system of protected waters, with a range of restrictions on fishing. However, it is known for being an excellent spot for shore diving. Over the years, this place has earned a loyal following of backpackers, snorkel and scuba enthusiasts.
Ambergris Caye
Ambergris Caye, is the largest island of Belize, located northeast of the country’s mainland, in the Caribbean Sea. San Pedro Town is the largest settlement and only town on Ambergris.
There are also a number of small villages and resorts. Seems like, for travelers, Ambergris Caye is a place where shorts and flip-flops are the dress code, golf carts are the mode of transportation, and laying on sandy white beaches is the primary activity. Ambergris Cay may be one of the best places to visit in Belize because it presents the ultimate Caribbean getaway with classic beaches, world-class accommodations, and delicious dining options.
