best places to visit in curacao
Christoffel National Park
Christoffel Park is a national park, protected nature area, and tourist attraction at the north-western end of the island of Curaçao. Best known for its flora, fauna, culture, and history, the park includes three former plantations (Plantage Savonet, Plantage Zorgvlied, and Plantage Zevenbergen), a mine complex (Newton), and the island’s highest point (Christoffelberg).
Most of the park is a nature reserve and has been part of Curaçao’s national park system since 1978. Travelers often hit the rocky hiking tracks and conquer the massive stone peak – a walk that takes about two hours to summit. Visitors also usually seek out the cottontails and rare deer, the scented Lady of the Night (a particularly beautiful orchid), and the wealth of pretty hummingbirds in the air.
Willemstad
Willemstad is the capital of Curaçao and the former capital of the Netherlands Antilles. Because of the Dutch architecture, Willemstad is sometimes called the “Amsterdam of the Western Hemisphere”.
The historic center of Willemstad has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1997. The city is known for its colored historic buildings that combine Dutch, Portuguese and Spanish styles. Originally these buildings were white as they were built of coral stone. In 1817, Governor Albert Kikkert introduced a law that ordered all buildings in the city to be painted in colour, and even though the law has not been in force since 1932, the colours have remained giving the city its unique feel.
