Blue Nile Falls
The Nile River is the longest in Africa and its two tributaries are the White Nile and the Blue Nile. The Blue Nile Falls is a waterfall on the Blue Nile river in Ethiopia.
It is known as Tis Abay in Amharic, meaning “great smoke”. The falls are about 42 meters high during the rainy season and are situated on the upper course of the river, about 30 km downstream from the town of Bahir Dar and Lake Tana. The falls are one of Ethiopia’s best-known tourist attractions. The Blue Nile Falls separate the ecology of Lake Tana from the ecology of the rest of the Nile, and this isolation has played a role in the evolution of the endemic fauna of the lake. Just downstream from the falls you’ll find Ethiopia’s first stone bridge, built in the 17th century.
Gondar
Gondar is a city and district (woreda) in Ethiopia. Also, Gondar previously served as the capital of both the Ethiopian Empire and the Begemder Province.
The city holds the remains of several royal castles, including those in the Fasil Ghebbi UNESCO World Heritage Site for which Gondar has been called the “Camelot of Africa”. This is where emperor Fasilides built his fairy tale castles, and this UNESCO World Heritage Site is now a wonderful museum complex that showcases the last centuries of the country’s emperors. The city of Gondar is extremely walkable – start from the Italian piazza in the city center and enjoy a walk along the streets with the tin-roofed stone buildings. Shopping, restaurants, and hotels are all available here as well.
Lalibela
Near the small town of Lalibela, there are eleven medieval churches, which are all carved out of massive slabs of volcanic rock!
The churches were built in the 12th-century under the direction of King Lalibela. He had a vision of a “New Jerusalem” for Christians who were prevented from making the pilgrimage to the Holy Land because of Muslim conquests across the region. Today it is still a popular pilgrimage site for Coptic Christians. The most fascinating of the ancient churches is the House of Saint George, or Biete Ghiorgis. This church is famed for its cross-shaped design and network of trenches and ceremonial passages which connect it to the other churches. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is truly one of Ethiopia’s incredible places to visit and will leave you in awe of the faith that can move mountains.
