Trésor Regional Nature Reserve
The Trésor Regional Nature Reserve is a regional nature reserve in French Guiana, France. The Reserve encompasses a huge area of the Kaw ecosystem and is a great place to observe black caimans, a smaller relative of the American alligator, as well as a rich diversity of birdlife, such as the scarlet ibis.
Most tourists explore the wetlands on guided sightseeing tours on local boats that vary considerably in comfort. Although this is one of French Guiana’s most accessible wildlife areas, it is still well off the beaten track. Within the Tresór Nature Reserve, Mont Favard features hiking trails, petroglyphs, and plentiful purple and yellow poison dart frogs.
Cayenne
Cayenne is the capital city of French Guiana. It is an agreeable town weathered in Creole and colonial architecture.
With Cayenne’s museums and its buzzing market, there’s enough here to keep you engaged for a day or two. Cayenne’s main market in Place Victor Schoelcher provides a spicy snapshot of local life. This town square is named after the man who ended slavery in French Guiana, and shopping here is one of the top things to do while you’re visiting French Guiana. Lastly, the carnival is one of the major events of the capital and takes place between Epiphany in early January and Ash Wednesday in February or March.
