best places to visit in martinique

Fort-de-France

Fort-de-France is the capital city of Martinique, an overseas department and region of France located in the Caribbean.

Although it’s not a famous tourist attraction itself, the city is the country’s main port and a launching point for island adventures and sightseeing tours. Some architectural attractions include Fort Royal (Fort Saint Louis), dating from 1638; the Palais de Justice; and the Cathédrale Saint-Louis with its distinctive spire. The city also is home to a busy market – a good place to find locally grown fruits and spices, as well as colorful beach towels.

Saint-Pierre

Saint-Pierre is the capital of the French archipelago of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, located on Saint-Pierre Island.

Also, Saint-Pierre is built among the ruins of the old town, a beautiful city once known as the Pearl of the West Indies until Mount Pelée erupted in 1902. The volcanic blast destroyed the town and killed all 30,000 residents, apart from a prisoner, who was protected by his thick cell walls. Today, you can walk among some of the stone ruins, including the survivor’s prison cell, the old theater, and the ruins of Le Figuier. All but one of the boats anchored in the harbor sank in the tidal wave that followed the eruption, which made the area popular among scuba divers.

The Balata Garden

The Balata Garden is one of Martinique’s main tourist attractions, with almost 160,000 visitors each year: a small, flower-filled corner, with countless exotic plants, spread out in terraces.

Located on the heights of Fort-de-France, the garden was created in 1982 by a passionate horticulturist named Philippe Thoze, who built his little tropical paradise for almost 20 years around his family’s Creole house. Today, it is an idyllic setting where you can take a long walk to discover all the beauty and diversity of the vegetation on the island of Martinique. You can admire an incredible selection of flowers in shimmering colours and atypical shapes, mangroves, centuries-old trees and numerous hummingbirds, which have come to seek food in the garden.
