best places to visit in paraguay
Asunción
Asunción is the capital and most populous city of the Republic of Paraguay. The city is the beating political, economic and cultural heart of modern Paraguay.
Here, visitors delve into what is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Americas. First raised by the conquistadors, Asunción was actually the base from which the Spanish ventured out westwards, to the wilds of Peru and Patagonia. Today, the town is privileged with the great National Pantheon of the Heroes, along with throbbing nightlife and the up-and-coming Paseo Carmelitas.
Cerro Cora National Park
Cerro Cora National Park is the largest protected area in Paraguay covering 55 km². In 1976, the park became an established nature reserve and holds also major historical value – this is where the last battle of the Paraguayan War took place, in 1870.
The park encompasses a great broad area of smoothly rising and falling savannah, where otherworldly hills peak above the swaying grasses. Muralia peak is a great place to start here, offering sweeping panoramas of the region’s forestry and valleys. Additionally, you can experience unique cultural encounters with the indigenous tribespeople and explore a smattering of mysterious ancient petroglyphs.
