best places to visit in Sierra Leone
Freetown
Freetown is the capital and largest city of Sierra Leone. Located in the Western area of the country, Freetown is Sierra Leone’s major urban, economic, financial, cultural, educational, and political center.
The city is a mixture of frantic port activity (it is home to one of the largest natural deep-water harbors on the globe) and laid-back beachside living. Make sure you experience the beautiful nature and local culture by visiting the powdery sands of Lakka Beach and Lumley, and to walk through the party strip of Aberdeen district, and out to the industrial sprawl of the suburbs.
Banana Islands
The Banana Islands are a group of islands that lie off the coast of Yawri Bay, southwest of the Freetown Peninsula in the Western Area of Sierra Leone.
The finger of land that forms the islands has all the shimmering, alabaster-hued beaches and lush rainforest you’d expect of a place so deep in the tropics. In fact, the cocktail of beautiful natural draws has made this place arguably the most popular weekend getaway from the big city. Thankfully, there are now some good guesthouses and hotels in the fishing settlements of Dublin and Ricketts.
