Mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan are caused by the build up of gases under the earth which eventually push the mud high into the air as a release. The first mud volcanoes are said to have erupted in Azerbaijan 25 million years ago. Interestingly, people who visited the Garasu often say that it looks like the surface of the moon.
Shirvan National Park
Shirvan National Park is a national park in Azerbaijan established on July 5, 2003 and covers an area of 543,735 km2. Activity there is focused on the protection and reproduction of the Goitered Gazelle, waterfowl birds and typical plant biotypes of the Shirvan Lowland.
The park is home to swans and flamingos, which tend to gather around the Flamingo Lake. Mud volcanoes are also commonly found in the park, which offer the opportunity to admire this amazing natural phenomenon. Quaint bungalows, or, camping on the northern beach of the park (with a permit) allow visitors to fully grasp the experience of nature and wildlife.
