Santa Maria is a city in the southern part of the island municipality of Sal, Cape Verde (Cabo Verde). It is located on the south coast and could be described as a lively and developed city.
The hotels in the city are of the highest standard and will comfortably meet, if not surpass, the expectations of travellers from Europe and North America. The city is one of the most ideal locations in Cape Verde for a classic beach resort holiday. The sandy beaches that lie only a few minutes walk from the luxurious hotels offer clear blue water, scuba diving and water sports such as jet-skiing. For visitors looking for culture and history, the main sight here is the Weighhouse in the old harbour which was used in the past to weigh salt before export.
Nova Sintra
Nova Sintra is a city in the central part of the island of Brava in southwestern Cabo Verde. It has been considered a city since 2010 and lies at an elevation of about 500 meters.
Agriculture is the predominant source of income in Brava. Nova Sintra is thought to be one of the most beautiful areas on the islands, and even though tourism is less developed here, you can still find a few small hotels and guest houses. There is a church and market worth seeing here but the number one reason to visit Vila Nova Sintra is the village itself and its extraordinary location. Be sure to see the stone replica of Christopher Columbus’s ship which guards the eastern entrance to the town.
Pico do Fogo
Le Pico do Fogo, which peaks at 2 meters, is the highest point in Cape Verde and is the only active volcano in the archipelago. Climbing the volcano is an incredible adventure that will allow you to walk through fields of black lava and observe the fumaroles that still escape from some cracks.
The climb usually takes between 4 and 6 hours, and the effort is well worth it with the spectacular view from the top over the entire island of Fogo. Accompanied by a local guide, you can learn about past eruptions and the unique geology of the island. This climb is a must-do experience for hiking enthusiasts and those who love volcanic landscapes.
