Kinshasa

Kinshasa, formerly Léopoldville, is the capital and largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the largest francophone (French-speaking) city in the world.

It is one of the 11 provinces of the DR of the Congo and was established by Henry Stanley in the late 19th century as a trading post. Now it is likened to an African New York City, where it is buzzing with energy and is home to over ten million residents. Enjoy a boat ride on the Congo or a BBQ picnic on its shores. The Marche des voleurs (the city market) is colorful and intense and loads of fun. There is great street art culture here and if you sit in one of the small cafes of 30 Juin Boulevard, the artists will come up and show you their pieces for sale.

Lola ya Bonobo

Lola ya Bonobo is the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos and was founded in 1994 by Claudine André. Also, Lola ya Bonobo means ‘paradise for bonobos’ in Lingala, the main language of Kinshasa. Lola ya Bonobo is home to about 60 bonobos who live in 300,000 m² of primary forest and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Kinshasa area. The bonobos are hunted for bushmeat, and when a mother is killed, the babies are often taken and sold on the black market as pets. The sanctuary tries to recover as many as possible so that they can live out their lives in safety. Additionally, the sanctuary also accepts volunteers.

Largest Country: Canada. The country is covering almost half the North American continent’s land area. Canada is slightly bigger than the USA and about as big as China.

OCEANIA

Oceania is in a continental group consisting of 14 countries and includes Pacific islands and Australia. Often Australia is named as a continent, but this means that the many islands and countries except Australia would then be not included. Oceania in fact is mostly ocean and spans a vast area as you can see below.
