best places to visit in equatorial guinea
Malabo
Malabo is the capital of Equatorial Guinea and is located on the north coast of the island of Bioko. Spanish is the official language of the city as well as the country, but Pichinglis is used as a language of wider communication across Bioko Island, including Malabo.
The city is a fusion between age-stained, and salt-washed colonial architectural pieces. They stand as testimony to the city’s long history, and its deep-rooted European heritage. Visitors can walk along the streets to see the gorgeous neo-Gothic spires of the Cathedral of Santa Isabel, and enchanting little Spanish-Esque Casas along the neighborhood roads. There’s also a university and a Cultural Center, surrounded by clubs and fried-plantain curry houses.
Annobón
Annobón is an island and the smallest province in both area and population of Equatorial Guinea. The island, set out in the swells of the Atlantic Ocean, past the isles of little-known Sao Tome, and directly in line with the coast of Gabon, is somewhat a difficult place to get to.
However, the fuss of the trip is most certainly worth it. The island has an interesting character, with a history of Portuguese and Spanish colonialism, and the creole-flavored beachside capital of San Antonio de Pale. Wildlife lovers will also find plenty to see here, such as humpback whales around the island, rare Ojo Blanco birds on the cliffs, and baobab trees hiding lizards in the backcountry.
