Saba National Marine Park
The Saba National Marine Park encompasses the waters and seabed encircling the Caribbean Island of Saba, Kingdom of the Netherlands.
In total, the marine park covers approximately 13 km2, and at the time of its creation in 1987, the government passed the Marine Environment Ordinance to protect the coral reefs and other marine life within the park. Saba is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s best, most pristine dive destinations. There are dozens of great dive sites, including reefs, wrecks, caves, tunnels, walls, and the Pinnacles, which are unique rock formations that thrust up from the ocean floor by volcanic action.
Mount Scenery
Mount Scenery is a potentially active volcano in the Caribbean Netherlands. This stratovolcano volcano peaks at 887 meters and is the highest point in Saba.
It can be summited in a half-day hike from Windwardshire (a town in Saba), but it’s not easy going. The trail is quite steep, but on a clear day (which is quite rare) you’ll be rewarded at the top with awesome views of St. Martin, St. Barts, St. Kitts, and St. Eustatius dotting the horizon. If you plan on hiking to the summit, make sure you devote at least 3 hours or so to the journey, which is aided by more than 1,000 stone steps – which as you might imagine can get pretty slippery in a rainforest.
