Initially, efforts regarding the park started in 1996 by the Island Council and it was designated the first national park by the government of the Netherlands Antilles in 1998. The Quill National Park covers the area around The Quill volcano, its highest point is 600 meters above sea level and consists of a forested area where acacia species, Mimosoideae, and the “Gum Tree” are commonly found. You can find various bird species here as well as endangered ones (the Antillean iguana and the red-bellied grass snake).
Oranjestad
Oranjestad is the capital of the island of Sint Eustatius in the Caribbean Netherlands, located on the west side of the island on Oranje Bay.
The city can be divided into a lower city and an upper city. The lower town, situated on the water, was once densely made up of warehouses and places of entertainment for the thousands of ship’s crews who arrived here at the Bay in the 18th century. The Upper Town is the commercial center of the city with a restored center called the “Historic Core.” In the 17th and 18th centuries, Oranjestad was an important trading center, but from the beginning of the 19th century, trading activities declined sharply. One of the most noteworthy sights here is the Fort Oranje, a well-preserved fortification from 1636.
Statia National Marine Park
Diving in the marine park is one of the most popular things to do in St. Eustatius. Comprised of the Northern and Southern Reserves, the Statia National Marine Park rings the island and is only open to visitors accompanied by local operators.
The dive sites are diverse, with everything from volcanic fissures and mini-walls to drop-offs, pinnacles, and wrecks. The marine life on the relatively healthy natural and artificial reefs is just as varied. You can see plenty of tropical fish, as well as sharks, lobsters, turtles, seahorses, and octopus. Dive moorings make it easy to access the sites without damaging the reef.
