Oranjestad
Oranjestad is the capital of the island of Sint Eustatius in the Caribbean Netherlands, located on the west side of the island on Oranje Bay.
The city can be divided into a lower city and an upper city. The lower town, situated on the water, was once densely made up of warehouses and places of entertainment for the thousands of ship’s crews who arrived here at the Bay in the 18th century. The Upper Town is the commercial center of the city with a restored center called the “Historic Core.” In the 17th and 18th centuries, Oranjestad was an important trading center, but from the beginning of the 19th century, trading activities declined sharply. One of the most noteworthy sights here is the Fort Oranje, a well-preserved fortification from 1636.
